This is a 7805 replacement design based on an LM2842 switching regulator. It has about the same input voltage range and current handling specs, but it's a switcher, so it's far more efficient.
This is a 5v to 3.3v buck regulator based on an SC189 switching regulator. While a linear regulator is often used, a linear is only 66% efficient. This switcher is closer to 90% efficient and can provide up to 1.5 amps of current.
