Thanks. But I found the answer this morning.
Options->Environment->editor->editor_options gets you an option list which
includes "see tabs". Then you click on the [X] box next to "see tabs" and
the X goes away. I had tried that yesterday. The tricky part is that instead
of closing the menu with "OK" you have to use "To all" or the selection
doesn't take effect. This was not intuitively obvious to me ;-)
