But I found the answer this morning. Options->Environment->editor->editor_options gets you an option list which includes "see tabs". Then you click on the [X] box next to "see tabs" and the X goes away. I had tried that yesterday. The tricky part is that instead of closing the menu with "OK" you have to use "To all" or the selection doesn't take effect.
