I still see an "illegal instruction" crash. Windows 98 attributes this to MS-DOS Prompt rather than BASH. I should emphasize this problem is not a "showstopper" for me. But the problem with this little example may indicate something more seriously wrong (on my system, at least). Thank you to yourself and to the others who have replied. -- Daniel Barker.
