I find the program may be reduced to

`poo`

and it still shows the same problem.

I still see an "illegal instruction" crash. Windows 98 attributes this to
MS-DOS Prompt rather than BASH.

I should emphasize this problem is not a "showstopper" for me. But the
problem with this little example may indicate something more seriously
wrong (on my system, at least).
