I don't know, what you are refering this to. It should be possible
to compile crafty with mingw32. It would need some Makefile hacking.
I said easiest, because the OP seems to have problems with Makefiles.
(There is a working makefile for nmake and MSVC in the crafty 
distribution. The DJGPP port doesn't seem to be maintained anymore,
I have sent Makefile patches long ago ...)

When you are refering to the speed. Due to the author of crafty,
MSVC will compile the fastest crafty executable, almost 30% faster
than gcc compiled. I can confirm this (and I tried many Compiler
switches). One can also see it at the assembler level.
