to put an end to this indenting and tabs discussion...
here's my problem:
at school, i use a linux machine. i write my programs using a programmers
editor in x-windows, which has user-defined tab stops. you can specify
whether to expand tabs to spaces, or to use the tab character. i use the
tab character. this comes in handy when i edit the programs in the shell.
i keep tab stops at every 5 characters. in the shell, i use pico. pico
has a non definable tab value of 8 (the default in many applications).
when i'm using pico, all my tabs are 8 spaces, not 5, since i had the
editor in x-win set to use real tabs, not spaces. although i don't like 8
spaces, i don't use pico very often. when i bring my programs home to my
dos computer and open it up in editor, which has tabs at 5 spaces, it all
looks fine. so, the moral of the story is this: if you can select between
real tabs or spaces, use real tabs to be able to use the tab key in other
programs, spaces if you want to hit spacebar alot. either way, it all
stays lined up correctly. well, at least for me.
