To: djgpp AT delorie DOT com Subject: tabs and such Message-ID: <20000414.165044.8207.0.MethodS-of-MayheM@juno.com> X-Mailer: Juno 1.49 X-Juno-Line-Breaks: 0-1,15-21 From: Ray Schulz Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2000 17:53:01 EDT Reply-To: djgpp AT delorie DOT com to put an end to this indenting and tabs discussion... here's my problem: at school, i use a linux machine. i write my programs using a programmers editor in x-windows, which has user-defined tab stops. you can specify whether to expand tabs to spaces, or to use the tab character. i use the tab character. this comes in handy when i edit the programs in the shell. i keep tab stops at every 5 characters. in the shell, i use pico. pico has a non definable tab value of 8 (the default in many applications). when i'm using pico, all my tabs are 8 spaces, not 5, since i had the editor in x-win set to use real tabs, not spaces. although i don't like 8 spaces, i don't use pico very often. when i bring my programs home to my dos computer and open it up in editor, which has tabs at 5 spaces, it all looks fine. so, the moral of the story is this: if you can select between real tabs or spaces, use real tabs to be able to use the tab key in other programs, spaces if you want to hit spacebar alot. either way, it all stays lined up correctly. well, at least for me.
