If you have emacs you can find out things about GNU (stands for "GNU's Not
UNIX") by reading the GNU manifesto.  Type c-h and then c-p.  I'm sure there
are other ways to read it, but I don't know them.  

There is information about DPMI (note letter order) at DJ's web site:

...however, most of the advantages of protected mode are taken care of
already--i.e. a program compiled with djgpp will run in protected mode without
you writing any special code for that.  

All that is necessary is that there is a DPMI for your program.  Windows has
one, so if you are using DOS from Windows it is taken care of, and there is a
free one, CWSDPMI, available at DJ's web site, if you need to run your
protected mode program in regular DOS.
