I have volumes 1, 2, and 3. Volume 3 is entitled "Sorting and Searching".
The lack of volumes 4-7 is rather a story of itself. Apparently Knuth was
dissatisfied with the typesetting done for the series, and decided to write
his own typesetting language during a sabbatical. This was TeX. It turned
out to be a somewhat larger project than he had anticipated. :-) He
evidently decided to concentrate on it, and the /The Art of Computer
Programming/ was backgrounded until it ceased to be a priority.

(I learned this story from The Jargon File, compiled by Eric S. Raymond)
