I prefer Allegro to GRX; you could also investigate SVGALIB, but I've
never tried it. Allegro isn't just a graphics library - it also has
many other useful routines, aimed mainly at game programming but useful
in other areas as well.

Allegro comes with a large .txt file explaining how all the functions
should be called, which has been converted into HTML format.
