Have you considered using JLIB v1.5? It's a cross platform library for DOS,
Linux, and Xwindows. The svgalib target has just been rewritten and is FAST.
It isn't as complete as Allegro, but it does have a fairly good set of features
(more of a graphics/input lib as opposed to a general game programming lib).
Give it a try.
