This might be a known bug.  See Bug Number 62 in DJ's Bug Reporting
System.  It's description is "popen()/pclose() seems to lose file
handles", but there's something about system() in there as well (I only
found out about that when the title was already hardwired).  There's a
patch to the system.c library source module as well.  Another Bug to
look at is Number 66, called "system() redirection: output can end up in
the wrong file". 

Hello, DJ, what about a distribution update containing all known fixed
bugs? Or maybe (shudder) a dj200m1?
