I've been hearing a lot about Emacs on this list, so I thought I'd put in 
a word too. A very good Emacs-like editor, with error- and syntax 
highlighting and most of the Emacs goodies, is JED. I recall that the 
author posted to this list some time back, I can say it's pretty cool. 
It's also pretty small, and the DOS 386 distribution was built with 
DJGPP. It's nothing like the size of Emacs (300K tops) but has most of 
the stuff; I'm not an Emacs person so I don't know what I'm missing, but 
JED is the editor I'm using right now under DOS, Solaris, and Linux.
