I need a little help getting started. I am trying to run
GNAT 2.04 on a standard 486 machine with 4MB memory and
420MB of disk, installing from the Walnut Creek CD_ROM
which purports to be a copy of Internet's PAL of April,
1995. I have done my best to follow the installation
instructions in README.DOS with the following results:
My SETs include:
[PATH includes c:\djgpp\bin]
TZ=EST5EDT
TMPDIR=c:/djgpp/tmp
GO32TMP=c:/djgpp/tmp
GO32=topline c:/djgpp/drivers/vga.grd gw 640 gh 480
The Directory of C:\DJGPP\BIN is:
GCC EXE 75,528 04-03-95 3:35p
GNAT1 EXE 1,919,728 04-12-95 1:11p

The Directory of C:\DJGPP\EXAMPLES includes:

IMPORTED C 98 03-30-95 4:22p
B_HELLO C 1,187 08-05-95 3:34p
[since B_HELLO.C is there, I apparently caused something to
happen as I plinked around with various flavors of Make.]
README.DOS then continues with the following "helpful"
directions:
'Features and gnatinfo.txt talk about GNU NYU Ada Translator
(GNAT).' -- There is no such file I can find on the CD
'Send bug reports to gnat-report AT cs DOT nyu DOT edu.' -- here it
is...
'The examples directory contains simple examples. To get
started, do:
"cd examples" and then "make".' -- this results in various
'I don't know how to..' messages. I think "make hello"
tried to work, but I might have used either "nmake hello"
or "gnatmake hello" Anyway, somehow, I got a compilation
started which ended up saying _main was missing, and with a
few other library looking things missing. Now, however, it
is consistent in not knowing how to make anything.
'Read gnatinfo.txt to learn how to compile and link.
Read features to find out what's implemented and what's
not.' -- I can't find these files.
What I think I need is either gnatinfo.txt if that tells me
how to compile, link and run an example, or some other
means of bootstrapping my way up.
Incidentally, the README.DJ file has some conflicting
suggestions:
'To try it out, change into the samples/hello directory of
the DJGPP distribution and type "tryit". If this doesn't
work, run "testit", which will check things out for you.'
-- needless to say, samples/hello is not there, and I don't
have tryit or testit.
Sorry to sound so whiney, but I feel I have genuinely
attacked this adventure game down all the paths I can think
of... Any help out there?
