Date: 13 Aug 95 09:54:36 EDT From: David Smith <73240 DOT 1666 AT compuserve DOT com> To: DJGPP Subject: Neeed startup help. I need a little help getting started. I am trying to run GNAT 2.04 on a standard 486 machine with 4MB memory and 420MB of disk, installing from the Walnut Creek CD_ROM which purports to be a copy of Internet's PAL of April, 1995. I have done my best to follow the installation instructions in README.DOS with the following results: My SETs include: [PATH includes c:\djgpp\bin] TZ=EST5EDT TMPDIR=c:/djgpp/tmp GO32TMP=c:/djgpp/tmp GO32=topline c:/djgpp/drivers/vga.grd gw 640 gh 480 The Directory of C:\DJGPP\BIN is: GCC EXE 75,528 04-03-95 3:35p GNAT1 EXE 1,919,728 04-12-95 1:11p GNATBIND EXE 136,648 04-12-95 1:10p GNATBL EXE 42,560 04-12-95 1:10p GNATCHP EXE 37,220 04-12-95 1:11p GNATMAKE EXE 135,308 04-23-95 10:51a GNATF EXE 1,090,284 04-12-95 1:11p GNATK8 EXE 42,708 04-12-95 1:11p GNATCHOP BAT 1,569 04-03-95 1:41p GNATCHOP 1,709 03-30-95 4:13p CC1 EXE 988,704 04-03-95 3:35p CPP EXE 92,992 12-06-94 1:32a RM EXE 36,853 03-09-95 10:05a AS EXE 202,084 08-02-94 1:48a COFF2EXE EXE 17,544 09-12-94 1:30a EMU387 36,864 11-30-93 2:44a EXE2COFF EXE 7,658 04-30-94 2:06a GO32 EXE 78,810 09-12-94 1:30a LD EXE 190,712 08-02-94 1:48a MAKE EXE 121,856 02-05-94 2:49a RANLIB EXE 125,952 08-02-94 1:48a GDB 630,784 07-27-94 2:06a SETDJGPP BAT 423 12-11-94 1:56p The Directory of C:\DJGPP\EXAMPLES includes: HELLO ALI 233 08-05-95 3:33p HELLO O 2,401 08-05-95 3:33p MAKEFILE DEP 1,656 04-13-95 11:00a HELLO ADB 670 03-30-95 4:22p IMPORTED C 98 03-30-95 4:22p B_HELLO C 1,187 08-05-95 3:34p [since B_HELLO.C is there, I apparently caused something to happen as I plinked around with various flavors of Make.] README.DOS then continues with the following "helpful" directions: 'Features and gnatinfo.txt talk about GNU NYU Ada Translator (GNAT).' -- There is no such file I can find on the CD 'Send bug reports to gnat-report AT cs DOT nyu DOT edu.' -- here it is... 'The examples directory contains simple examples. To get started, do: "cd examples" and then "make".' -- this results in various 'I don't know how to..' messages. I think "make hello" tried to work, but I might have used either "nmake hello" or "gnatmake hello" Anyway, somehow, I got a compilation started which ended up saying _main was missing, and with a few other library looking things missing. Now, however, it is consistent in not knowing how to make anything. 'Read gnatinfo.txt to learn how to compile and link. Read features to find out what's implemented and what's not.' -- I can't find these files. What I think I need is either gnatinfo.txt if that tells me how to compile, link and run an example, or some other means of bootstrapping my way up. Incidentally, the README.DJ file has some conflicting suggestions: 'To try it out, change into the samples/hello directory of the DJGPP distribution and type "tryit". If this doesn't work, run "testit", which will check things out for you.' -- needless to say, samples/hello is not there, and I don't have tryit or testit. Sorry to sound so whiney, but I feel I have genuinely attacked this adventure game down all the paths I can think of... Any help out there? David Smith
