Subject: Speed of Version 1.11

Just last night I was thinking back to when I watched my hand-built
Small-C compiler on my Osborne-1 (1MHz 8-bit Zilog Z80, if you don't
remember those) compile to stdout. DJGPP 1.11 compiles files (in this
case, GhostScript 2.6.1) at about the rate that Small-C compiled
lines. (Well, maybe 20% of the rate, but same order of magnitude.)
Of course, I'm now running a 50MHz 486DX with a SCSI disk hanging
off an AMI caching SCSI controller with a 4MB cache :-)
