One thing Eric forgot to mention in his excellent post on porting was the
difference between signals on DOS and UNIX.  DJGPP has no support for 
signals, so you will have to watch out for that.  With regard to a homework
assignment, why not try flex-2.3.7 and bison-1.19?  Flex is real easy to port
using DJGPP.  Bison should also be fairly easy, with the added benefit that
you could upload the result to a DJGPP archive site such as math.niu.edu
and we could have a newer bison than version 1.16.
