Subject: Saving Gnu C/C++ compiler errors on a file

How can I get the Gnu C/C++ compiler to send the compiler error remarks to a
file as well as to the screen? I have tried various ways to try to make this
happen, but they don't work. E.g. a Fortran compiler called WATFOR can be told
to send the errors to a file xxxx.ERR (if it is compiling a program xxxx.FOR),
which is handy, for once me not having to continually handwrite scrawl the
error remarks from the screen onto paper before I can edit the program file.
