I downloaded the latest binaries for Linux, and unarchived them to their
default directories, which start with /usr/local/pgcc.

Simply running gcc produces a single line of output that says "Illegal
instruction".

This is on a 486DX2/66 machine, with the Slackware 7.0 distribution.

Do I need to download the source and compile 486-compatible binaries?
