I can't tell you for sure whether gcc 2.7.2.3 will work, but I am running
a Slackware 4.0 libc5 system, and I used to have pgcc 1.0.3 , which was
compiled with egcs 1.0.3 or thereabouts. Pgcc did work but for my purpose
the improvement was marginal, and when I kept on upgrading etc (I have gcc
2.95.1 at the moment, and I also have glibc 2.1.1 as test libraries and I
have, according to the glibc HOWTO, make gcc capable of compiling and
linking against glibc 2.1), it was too much trouble of maintaining two
compilers - I still want to keep gcc/egcs for more stability crucial stuff
like compiling the linux kernel.

So it is possible, just a bit of trouble. I would suggest "make bootstrap"
gcc 2.95.1 first and use gcc 2.95.1 to compile pgcc though.
