Subject: Problems applying the patch....

Hello,

I'm trying to apply the egcs1.1b to pgcc1.1 patch, but it keeps on
failing. I'm using patch 2.5 on a Slackware 3.4 & linux 2.0.34 system.
I follow the *exact* instructions given; untar the egcs release,
change to that directory and try to apply the patch. I see loads and
loads of data scroll by in the familiar incomprehensible diff style.
Then, I'm asked "File to patch: ". I don't actually know; there
may be dozens and dozens of files to be patched. I simply press return,
and patch asks me "ignore patch" (or something very similar) and I
press "y" to ignore it. Patch then stops. Checking for any .rej and
..orig files I find two in the subdirectory "etc" of the egcs tree,
but no others.

So, what's going on here? What is *supposed* to happen? I've tried
unzipping the patch *first*, and then applying it, but then gunzip fails
saying the format of the file is not correct. How can it fail now,
but still worked when I use the "gunzip <patchfile" command before?

By the way I am *not* on the mailing list: please send any replies to
the email adress below or in the header.

HELP!
