I also have the same experience with a Pentium II (build with the souce)
and a Pentium Pro (with the binaries distrib)
try -mpentium instead, give better results
some flags in -O6 slow downs performance.
use -O3 and specific flag instead
but this is just some observations ....
Notice that with a Pentium MMX and pgcc-1.0.1 build on the machine,
performance are much better than with gcc ...
