gerbv from the geda project apparently cannot read RS-274D.
But gerbview from kicad can. It can then export to kicads layout format,
from where you can go ahead and export to the more modern RS-274X.

I just went this route for the layout mentioned in this stackexchange

When exporting to the layout format I had to give the meaning of the
different layers. This is to be expected. Also, I am not sure about
the holes. It might be necessary to place them again centered to the
pads. But the fundamental geometry seemed to work out fine.
