I routinely hand solder 0.5mm pitch 144 pin TQFP FPGAs. Excellent
flux is essential - I use Electrolube SMFL aerosol flux with a
dispenser tube. My procedure is:

1. place the part and solder two corner pins
2. check alignment with a USB microscope, adjust as necessary
3. spray plenty of SMFL
4. with a fine tipped iron and good quality 60/40 solder form a small
solder ball and drag it along a row of pins.
5. repeat step 4 for the other sides
6. clean up shorts with copper solder wick and more SMFL
7. clean up flux with IPA
8. check for dry joints and tiny shorts with a pin and USB microscope.
Fix with SMFL, solder and solder wick as required.
9. final clean with IPA
