correct.
PCB uses the pin numbers of the footprint. These are matched to the pin
number of the symbol.

The pin number attribute can contain (almost) arbitrary strings rather
than just integers. I use 'K' and 'A' as pin numbers for diode symbols
in my library. This seems to be less prone to confusion than '1' and
'2'.
