Hi John,

I quickly scanned your previous post, you seem to be using Debian
Jessie (v.8) that has guile 2.0.11. I'm using guile from testing,
version 2.0.11 with some extra Debian patches. I am using the recent
gEDA git version (..., make install). No environment variables are set
before executing gschem (guile, geda, gschem, ...)

After running gschem I see the menu's. The menu is defined in the
system-gschemrc file, try to load only the system config file.

The obvious(?) test procedure:

1) Could you remove all (system-)gschemrc files (locate gschemrc) out of
the way so you are only using the installed version. Backup your
    user config: mv ~/.gEDA ~/.gEDA.orig
2) Create an empty ~/.gEDA folder, gschem automatically creates a logs
    folder
3) Clean the guile cache (~/.cache/guile/) so when executing gschem you
     see guile compiling files.
4) The (empty) folder you run gschem from has no gschemrc file?

Run gschem, are you seeing menu's, icons and a title block? What
information is in the gschem log file? (see ~/.gEDA/logs)

Now wondering if I have missed something ("... I'd like to have the year
old version at least working fully."),
