There is a small but sometimes significant benefit to nm: Unlike centimil 
the nanometer is a unit sanctioned by the SI. If a project requires 
certification of some sort, non-standard units tend to raise an eye-brow 
or two during the audit. Think ISO-9001, ESA, health related products...

Backward compatibility is a necessity to not make users revolt :-)
