Buses certainly are useful. They work almost like a cable with several signals.

If looking at a symbol there are named pins and for a bus pin these signals are connected to one pin. For efficient use then connecting a signal to a bus pin there must be a method to select which signal on the bus pin it should be connected to and connections with other names should not be allowed.

It is generic because almost anything which could be represented as symbols connected by lines could be drawn.
