I already implemented this (not in an ideal way, but as an extension
of our existing layer system)... had thought it was upstream, but
having just checked - no, it was waiting for further testing (which
I'd say had happened now, since both myself, and the person I
implemented it for, have been using it for some time now).

I will try at some point (perhaps not until February or later), to
untangle what patches I have ready for upstream, and get them pushed.
