There's no way to know. There are lots of circumstantial metrics like
number of downloads, but then there are mirrors and so on. Nothing
good.

Yes that's exactly my point. With open source it's not really possible
to know what "most" want, because you never know who "all" are. I
think the only reasonable thing to do is to work on what you want
yourself, and possibly listen to what others say that they want if
you're feeling generous with your spare time. :)
