If the diode is soldered in a reflow oven, the small pads are actually
beneficial. They increase the force of surface tension to pull a slightly
misaligned component to the center. For manual soldering this does not
apply. Maybe, I will follow your suggestion.

PS: Note, that the pin numbers in my footprints are "anode" and "cathode"
to make extra sure, nets are not messed up. If your symbols use "1" and
"2" the footprint should reflect this enumeration.
