> 16 layer: Linear search in average 8 iterations to find an object No, it's 16 iterations to find the 0..16 matching objects. We rarely, perhaps never, are looking for one layer - we're always looking for "all layers of a given type". But it's still just a for loop and a compare, 16 times.
