Not true. Symbols are, by default, accessed by referring to the symbol file name in gschem and gnetlist. Simply relaunching gschem or running gnetlist effectively updates your symbols from whatever the symbol files contain. You can embed symbols in the schematics, and that’s a solution in some cases, but it is too inflexible for others.

For many projects, it’s handier to compose a project symbol library selectively from the distributed default symbols, symbols from gedasymbols, and your own custom symbols. Then you get editable symbols that you can put under your project’s revision control system. Once you have this, it’s nice, but composing it is a bit clumsy with our current tools.
