The idea is that the symbols have symbolic pin names, and "some
database" (probably in conjunction with the netlisters) turns those
into real pin numbers based on specific part number and package
information (or into real sim models, or real bom info, you get the
idea).  It also forwards pin/gate swapping information to pcb (or
whoever else needs it, I can't imaging worrying about pin swapping in
a simulator ;).  PCB can send "as-built" info back to the netlister
(to help it allocate new gates/pins) or forward to an "as-built"
schematic.
