How odd.

I ask my customers to put cut-outs either in the outline file (.gm1 or
.gko) or do it as a non-plated slot, along with non-plated holes
(-NPTH.txt). I wrote about it here:

  http://hackvana.blogspot.com.au/2014/02/slots.html

Gerber/Excellon are formats which exist to convey info from CAD to CAM. In
the words of Karel Tavernier (who is the boss of Ucamco, the custodian of
Gerber), "The Extended [Gerber] format enables clear, unambiguous
communication between designer and CAM engineer".

This is a really interesting article, especially the first page:

http://www.ucamco.com/files/downloads/file/22/Kick_Starting_a_Revolution_IPC-2581_Meets_Gerber.pdf

IMO it's a mistake for us to second-guess how a board shop actually makes
the boards. It serves as a specificationm and should just describe what we
want. I really can't understand that a company would require us to do
their CAM job work for them. Sigh.

Mitch.

(thanks to xmd for writing the pcb patch which adds --name-style hackvana)
