I use Mercurial.  Lets not spend yet more time in non-productive
discussions about git vs XYZ...

When this stuff was originally done neither git or hg existed, csv
sucked (still does because it can't rename a file etc) and svn was
just starting up.

That also make the code depended on the tool set which can be a long
term maintenance headache when you need to fix something in ten years
(it has happened more than once).
Yes, archive the tool set or the build machine itself etc etc...
