Girvin,
The only working way I know to move to back in gschem is as follows:
  - select all using Ctrl-a
  - deselect the object(s) you want to move to back using
    Ctrl+left-mouse-click
  - Ctrl-x (cut to clipboard)
  - Ctrl-v (paste from clipboard)
Accordingly, the two last actions are the way to bring objects to front.
If your drawing is complex, it may be helpful to make a separate symbol
for it.
