Matt,
I use (or misuse, if you like) gschem for creating mechanical drawings
of my projects. I do so, because I have not yet found a good open source
Linux 2D mechanical drawing application to use in place of gschem. I am
still keeping an eye on the available open source Linux drawing
packages, but most are focusing on 3D now and are not actively
supporting the 2D mode of their applications. This even includes 2D
bug-fixes. I don't need 3D for my work. But I do need a reliable,
productive 2D drawing package that goes up to at least D-size (22x34").
I found the best gschem drawing tools I created to be 1:1 and 2:1 ruler
symbols, which I load in and move around as I draw lines depicting my
hardware designs. That sure beats calculating the XY points from the
coordinate window. I created a lot of graphics-only symbols in my
symbol library which I use for non-schematic drawings.

Most of my professional experience has been with Mil-D-100 drawings, so
my library symbols and drawing formats conform to that standard as close
as I can make them.
