It looks likes only the non-generic icons, the ones that are supplied by
gschem are not being found by gtk.

I can confirm using the package from the repositories on Xubuntu 14.04 that
all of the icons located in gschem/data/ are not found. Strangely, depite
the others being missing the main tool bar icons are found on my machine.

However, the version from the git repository that I have (December 22, 2014
to be precise) works completely. Are you using a prebuilt package or are
you (as you seem to be hinting at) building a recent version from source?
