I think your questions have already been answered in a positive
direction by John Doty and Mr gedau.
I have to admit that you are the first person I am aware of considering
switching from KiCad to gEDA/PCB. My impression is, that kids prefer
KiCad over gEDA/PCB in these days -- most still prefer proprietary tools
and do much complaining about the free tools.
Without doubt you can build fine electronics with gEDA/PCB and related
tools, many people have done that. But not all tools may look and work
like one expects. You may have noticed that on this mailing list there
is not very much activity...
Personally I do not really consider switching from gEDA/PCB to KiCad,
but at the same time I prefer nice looking and easy to use tools. So in
the past I spent some time on a plain schematics editor and an
topological autorouter -- both basically work fine but will need still

If you intend to contribute, you should note that gEDA/PCB is GTK with
plain C and guile, while KiCAD is wxWidgets with C++.
