OK, I thought at first you were saying that DJ's suggestion would
not work for Rob.  But I think what you are actually saying that you
achieved the desired result of having parts extending past the edge
of the board outline, without actually drawing the “outline” layer.

So your method was likely the only way to do it before pcb
supported the “outline” layer, but DJ's suggestion is still probably
the recommended way to go and is more flexible (you can have
parts hanging off both left and right side, for instance) and easy
to maintain (you can move these overhanging parts without them
snapping back onto the board interior).
