I'm still able to use McAfee Stinger and Trend Micro Sysclean on
Windows 98/SE.  So, maybe those will work for you as well.  IIRC,
Stinger checks the most recent 5000 threats, and Sysclean checks
everything in existence except recent threats.  You must download
patterns for it separately.  Spybot Search & Destroy should work
just fine for malware.  AVG Free should hopefully still be available
for XP too.  For Win 7/8, the current AVG Free has a root kit scanner
too.  So, you shouldn't need a separate root kit scan util.  I
generally use AVG and Spybot, unless AVG won't work, i.e., no longer
works for Win 98/SE.  I run the others when there are problems or
where AVG won't work anymore.  All of these are free.
