I think the days of requiring an 8.3 clean path from the ftp site to
the user's machine have past, even if the machine itself is 8.3.  They
can rename it (or expect it to be cleanly renamed) as needed, and most
systems aren't 8.3 any more.

I'd still *prefer* 8.3 so let's not go renaming everything ;-)
