The GCC 4.2 changelog at http://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-4.2/changes.html says:

    The <?, >?, <?=, and >?= operators, deprecated in previous GCC
releases, have been removed.

They're not standard C, so I doubt they'll be back.  If you need them
you'll need to use one of the older versions of GCC.
