Considering the sequence you describe above, it is more likely
that the zips are fouled.  It seems highly probably that your
original problem was due to soft memory failings (unless you have
ECC memory installed and enabled) which could also have fouled the
original OS.

Redownload the appropriate zips, saving the old ones.  If the new
downloads work, a binary compare between new and old zips may give
you some clues.

Run extensive overnight (and longer) memory tests.  Cheak module
seating in sockets. etc.
