Instead, it first honors the system / user path settings:
* Right-click "My Computer" (German: "Arbeitsplatz"), then 
  select "Properties";

* (XP) Click the "Extended" tab, then the "Environment variables" 
  button. (This is different in NT and W2000)

Then, instead using autoexec.bat, it processes 
\windows\system32\autoexec.nt
which by default doesn't include a path setting at all.
