Problem solved; see other thread "detecting debugger". Problem was this
very tight loop:

static void Wait (void)
{
  unsigned long t = _farpeekl (_dos_ds,0x46C);
  while (_farpeekl (_dos_ds,0x46C) == t)
         ;
}

Inserting an __asm__ ("sti") in the loop solved the problem.
