I'm not sure I understand what do you want to accomplish.  I also
don't understand what do you mean by "the name of the current MSDOS
window's initial command".

It sounds like you have some problem to solve, and those two items are
just two possible solutions you thought about.  If that's true, could
you please state the original problem?  It could be that the solution
is none of the two you've been considering, but rather something
entirely different.
