as --version gives "GNU assembler 2.11.2".

It just print the same addresses in bright white. The distribution gcc.exe is 
stripped.

I have the latest binutils.

I've been using gcc 3.0.4 with the latest stuff as of 3.0.4's release to a 
fresly installed directory with no problems. trying to put gcc31b.zip there: boom!

Oh yes, I tried in DOS mode, crashes there too.
